Condemning the Gender Equality Organization

We condemn the discrimination created by the work under the charge of Oya Talat on establishing the Gender Equality Organization which aims to prevent gender-based discrimination in social and political life of Turkish Cypriots. The terminology used by the Gender Equality Organization is not up-to-date and does not include all segments of the society. The common struggle with LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) individuals to end the patriarchal culture has been ignored and a patriarchal, heterosexist perspective has been adopted.

We request that the Gender Equality Organization’s work is conducted with the inclusion of all groups in order to be stronger in the battle against patriarchy; we would also like to emphasize that as Initiative Against Homophobia we will show support to all struggles in line with the abovementioned request. Queer Cyprus is a civil society movement that started in 2008 with the name of “Initiative Against Homophobia” to change the discriminatory laws in the north of Cyprus and to create public opinion for the rights and freedoms of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans and Intersex people. Queer Cyprus embraces diversity and wages a feminist, anti-militarist, ecologist and veganist struggle against all forms of oppression.
